Joseph R. Svinth: Pacific Northwest Judo: The Seattle
Dojo, 1924-1953
Photographs:
- Kaimon Kudo, 1935. After leaving the Seattle
Dojo, Kudo became a well-known professional wrestler;
this photo is from his 1935 book called Kaimon Kudo
Reveals the Secrets of Jiu-Jitsu. (Photo from the

- Seattle's first All-Northwest Judo Tournament.
Sponsored jointly by Seattle Dojo and Tentoku Kan,
February 7, 1932. Like most pre-World War II Seattle
judo tournaments, the venue was the Nippon Kan Theater.

- Pacific Northwest judo instructors, 1939.
Left to right: Yasuyuki Kumagai (Seattle Dojo), Matsuo
Sakagami (White River Dojo), Chuji Sakata (Tentoku
Kan).
- Seattle Dojo Yudansha, April 26, 1940.
The calligraphy on the back wall under the photograph
of Jigoro Kano reads "Polish the body and mind." The
framed photo on the right side of the picture is a
1909 Rogers photograph of an early club leader named
Tokugoro Ito. The man in the framed photo on the left
is unidentified. The letters on the patch on Toshio
Taniguchi's judogi stand for "Seattle Judo Yudanshakai,"
which was authorized for wear by members of the
Northwest All-star team. The photo was taken inside
the Seattle Dojo, from a position near the front door.
