Announcing Michi: Japanese Arts & Ways
by Kevin Heard
tone
Stone Bridge Press, one of very few publishers specializing
in books on Japan and Japanese culture, recently announced
the birth of a new SBP imprint called Michi: Japanese Arts
& Ways. (There is, incidentally, no business link between
Michi Online and the new imprint, although they do
share similar names.) Peter Goodman, the chief editor at SBP,
explained:
From chado, "the Way of tea," to budo, "the
martial Way," Japan has succeeded in spiritualizing a
number of classical arts. The names of these skills often
end in Do, also pronounced "Michi," meaning the "Way."
By studying a Way in detail, we discover vital principles
that transcend the art and relate more broadly to the art
of living itself. Featuring the work of H. E. Davey and
other select authors, books in the series Michi: Japanese
Arts and Ways focus on these Do forms. They are about
discipline and spirituality, about moving from the
particular to the universal . . . to benefit
people of any culture.
Currently included in the new series are the books Brush
Meditation: A Japanese Way to Mind & Body Harmony as well
as The Japanese Way of the Flower: Ikebana as Moving
Meditation. Next up on the Michi: Japanese Arts &
Ways publishing roster is Japanese Yoga: The Way of
Dynamic Meditation. The new imprint is looking for
authors with interesting book ideas. Michi Online
fans and readers who have propositions for books that might
fit into the Michi: Japanese Arts & Ways format should
send query letters to H. E. Davey, who is the Series
