"Form." Practice is often conducted in the traditional Japanese arts via prearranged exercises or kata. Calligraphy students try to make an exact copy of their teacher's painted characters. Martial artists perform drills that have been passed on from teacher to teacher. These handed down, formal exercises are kata.
