chado
In the twelfth century, the archetype of drinking powdered tea was brought to Japan from China. In the sixteenth century, Sen no Rikyu instituted the foundation of chado, the “way of tea,” as it is known today. Chado is strongly influenced by Zen Buddhist thought, and the fundamental principles of chado are stated in the words harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility.
