netsuke
Netsuke served both practical and artistic purposes. The classical Japanese apparel, the kimono, had no pockets. A large sash (obi) tied the robes together. Consequently, things that needed to be carried were held on a cord tucked under the sash. The hanging objects (sagemono) were secured with beautifully carved toggles (netsuke).
