origami
The origins of paper and paper folding are not completely clear, but there is no doubt about the respect with which the material has been held in Japan. This innate reverence for paper in Japan is nearly without counterpart in the West. In Japan, origami is a work of art that shares commensurate rank with painting and sculpture, and it is associated with stylized traditions such as ceremonial etiquette and paper adornments attached to presents (noshi).
