tsuba
A tsuba is the hand guard fixed on a Japanese sword. It serves to keep the user's hand from shifting up onto the cutting edge of the sword, to offset the weight of the blade, to make known the social status, philosophy, and tastes of its possessor, and to safeguard the hand from an rival’s blade. Many tsuba are commonly regarded as works of art, and fine examples are widely collected throughout the world.
