ura
Japanese culture is based around a “public face” as well as a “hidden face;” and the universe is composed of a similar visible/invisible duality (in-yo). Dualism in the arts of Japan is sometimes referred to as omote and ura. Omote means “front,” while ura indicates “back.” “Outside” and “inside” are also viable translations. Omote is what we see; ura is as important—maybe more so—but it isn’t immediately apparent. See omote.
